Joe Root scored a 40-ball half-century in a counter-attacking partnership with Gary Ballance.

Root's dismissal, for a 76-ball 78, proved to be the turning point of the game.

Keshav Maharaj removed Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow before Tea to put the visitors firmly in control.

Chris Morris claimed three lower-order wickets as England folded for 205, giving South Africa a 130-run lead.

South Africa lost Heino Kuhn early in the second innings but Elgar and Amla stretched the lead past 200 by stumps.

England have much to ponder if they are to force a way back into the game.
